Hello Tweeple,

Couple of days back, we have decided to microblog on twitter and also share our experiences of microblogging over our blog.

Now first of all before you read any further or we type any further, we have to introduce ourselves. We are a set of Rural Graduates who are working in a Village based social enterprise (Rural BPO ) called SourcePilani >> Read more in About us page ..

Day 1 on Twitter as @SMMalerts :

Before we talk about the Day 1, you need to know a small discussion that we had in our team about the username. SMMalerts was available hence we have take it (In fact we have taken @smmalert first) . We had an argument in the team where in one of our team member wanted a human name to the account as only human faces and human’s have a place on twitter and are treated as credible people. Their was a dis agreement and we eventually ended up sticking to SMMalerts as that is the service that we provide and Social Media is our passion.

Day 1 started off well, we have decided to share any interesting article that we read about Social Media and share it on our twitter handle. We have done a decent job I guess we were getting a hang of how things work and we realized we need to add an “S” to our username and we changed it from @smmalert to @smmalerts.

Day 2 we have followed some real interesting people like @mashable @andybeal .

When we first looked at their profiles we were amazed with the number of people who follow them religiously and the kind of fan following that they have over Twitter (and other Social Media sites as well). One impression that we always had was that such people will be busy throughout and they wont have time to respond, we haven’t had a conversation with @mashable but through Andy (@andybeal) we got to know about something interesting that was happening that morning, “The Internet Summit” where lot of veterans in the internet marketing business (including andy who is the founder of  Trackur.com, author of Radically Transparent, editor of MarketingPilgrim.com) where going to talk, people from ESPN, People from Technorati , Microsoft , Google , Blogger etc were attending. Click here to go to the event page of Internet Summit 2009.  We were lucky enough to have Andy in our following list and hence lucky enough to get some live feeds from #isum09. Thanks Andy, you have thought us the first lesson on Twitter on how to live tweet from events.

In this part of the world it was late in the night by then we had a cricket match (People in India, Including us are crazy about cricket), India vs Australia and we have seen how Sachin Tendulkar (Known as God) who was the first player to reach 17,000 ODI runs became a trending topic on Twitter. Before this we never believed in trending topics as most of it sounded like spam.

On Day 2 we had our first friend conversation and we also had our First RT from this gentleman called Chuck Allen (@chucka_nc ) . We also had around 50 followers at the end of Day 2 . The twitter fever was catching on in the team..

Day 3:

We have a single post for Day 1 to Day 3 as @SMMalerts because we haven’t decided to blog till Day 3. We launched this new project which we call it “The Social Media 365” project. (Inspired by the Flickr 365 project). The idea suddenly struck and we thought why not implement it and here we are posting about our experiences so far.

Along with regular alerts we also tried to get used to an API called Seesmic, we tried to download it over the desktop and use it but unfortunately Adobe Air wasn’t installing.  Then we posted this on twitter:

AdobeAir_Fail

And immediately within no time we get a response from @romilmittal who is an employee of Adobe currently working with the Air Team. (This is what is perhaps the power of Social Media ?? )Here is the response :

Romilmittal

Meanwhile we have started our full fledged conversation with Matt Stenning ( @market_maverick ), he is a very kind guy and a veteran in the twitter world with over 20,000 followers. The first question that we  asked him was about how he was able to manage around 20k people and reply to them so promptly as he was replying to us? and his response was ” I like networking” . Yes, that is what Social Media is all about.. Its definitely not about all the spammers who fill your Direct Messages (DM’s) with all spammy links. Throw all spammers away and make Twitter a better place to Tweet.

Those were the lessons that we learned so far and we are sure we will be getting to know a lot more people in the coming 362 days and beyond.

Signing Off !!

Team @SMMAlerts
